Business coaching basics

What a business coach does, when you need one, and how coaching differs from consulting.

A business coach helps an owner decide what to work on, builds the plan to get there and holds the owner accountable for doing it. The coach does not run the business; the owner and the team do the work, and the coach makes sure it is the right work and that it gets done.

In practice that means regular sessions (with Coach Ever, one 60-minute session every week or every other week) on the areas that hold most businesses back: the owner’s time, the numbers, sales and marketing, the team and the systems that let the business run without the owner in every decision.

You probably need a coach when the business depends on you for almost everything and growth has stalled even though you work long hours. Common signs: revenue has been flat for a year or more, you cannot take a week off without problems, good people leave, you are busy but profit is not growing, or you know what should change but it never gets done.

A coach is less useful if you are not willing to change how you work, because coaching produces results through the changes you make between sessions.

A consultant analyses a problem and recommends, or carries out, a solution; a coach builds your ability and your team’s ability to solve problems and keeps you accountable over time. Consulting is usually a defined project with a deliverable. Coaching is an ongoing relationship focused on the owner’s decisions and habits.

Many owners need both: consulting to fix a specific issue such as cash flow or a broken process, and coaching so the improvement lasts. Coach Ever offers both, as business coaching and as small business consulting.

Executive coaching is one-to-one work on how you lead: the decisions only you can make, how you delegate, how you hold your team accountable and how you spend your time. Expect to set specific goals at the start, meet on a fixed rhythm and be asked to act on what you agree between sessions.

Coach Ever is a Certified Executive Coach. Before coaching he was Vice President of Industrial Operations at Grupo Antolin, an automotive supplier, so his executive coaching leans on systems, numbers and operations.

FAQ

Growing a profitable business

Practical answers on profit and on building a business that runs without you.

Profit grows fastest when you improve several drivers a little at the same time rather than one driver a lot. ActionCOACH’s 5 Ways model looks at five: the number of leads, the conversion rate, the number of transactions per customer, the average sale and the profit margin. A modest gain in each multiplies into a much larger gain in net profit.

Start with your numbers: know your margin by product or service, what each employee produces and where cash goes each month. Then cut what does not pay its way, raise prices where your value supports it and fix the sales process before spending more on marketing.

A business runs without its owner when the work is written down as systems, the team is trained and accountable for results, and the owner manages through numbers instead of doing the work. That takes three steps: document how each important job is done, hire and develop people to run those systems, and set up a regular rhythm of meetings and measures so problems surface without you.

It is steady work rather than a quick fix. Owners who try to do it all at once tend to stall; working through it one area at a time, with someone holding you to it, is what coaching is for.

FAQ

Working with Coach Ever

Cost, the areas he serves, who he is and how to get started.

Business coaching is usually priced per month or per program rather than per hour, and prices vary widely with the coach’s experience and how much time is involved; the site’s cost guide covers typical ranges. Coach Ever does not publish fixed prices because the cost depends on the program: one-to-one coaching, group coaching (ActionCLUB), planning workshops (GrowthCLUB) or team training.

The way to find out is a free strategy session, where you agree what you need before discussing cost. You can also start with 2 weeks of free coaching to see whether it works for you.
